Perjalanan Red Hot Chili Peppers (RHCP) dimulai pada tahun 1983 di Los Angeles, California, ketika sekelompok sahabat yakni Anthony Kiedis, Flea (Michael Balzary), Hillel Slovak, dan Jack Irons membentuk sebuah band. Pada masa-masa awal, band ini sering kali mengalami bongkar pasang personel dan kesulitan mendapatkan ritme yang stabil. Setelah kehilangan Hillel Slovak karena tragedi yang menyayat hati pada tahun 1988, band ini akhirnya menemukan gitaris muda berbakat John Frusciante dan drummer terhandal legendaris mereka, Chad Smith.
Gebrakan besar RHCP terjadi melalui kesuksesan komersial pertama lewat album Mother's Milk (1989), yang kemudian meledak di pasaran berskala global lewat rilisnya mahakarya Blood Sugar Sex Magik pada tahun 1991. Album ini melahirkan lagu-lagu hit abadi seperti "Under the Bridge" dan "Give It Away", mengukuhkan posisi Red Hot Chili Peppers sebagai pelopor sekaligus raksasa genre perpaduan rock, punk, dan funk. Kesuksesan luar biasa ini dilanjutkan pada tahun-tahun berikutnya meski sempat terjadi pergantian gitaris dengan masuknya Dave Navarro dalam album One Hot Minute (1995). Pada era ini, gaya vokal rap dan melodi khas Anthony Kiedis serta cabikan bass ritmis khas Flea menjadi identitas tak tertandingi yang digandrungi oleh jutaan penggemar.
Tidak ingin terjebak dalam satu gaya yang monoton, Red Hot Chili Peppers terus berevolusi secara musikal terutama setelah kembalinya John Frusciante. Lewat album Californication (1999), mereka mulai mengeksplorasi nuansa rock alternatif yang lebih matang dan melodis. Eksperimen ini semakin sukses di album By The Way (2002) yang kaya akan harmoni vokal, disusul oleh peleburan kreativitas puncaknya dalam album ganda Stadium Arcadium (2006) yang sukses merajai berbagai tangga lagu dan memenangkan banyak penghargaan Grammy. Era ini menjadi masa keemasan kedua yang membesarkan nama mereka ke puncak popularitas modern.
Seiring berjalannya waktu, perubahan kembali menghantam band ini saat Frusciante mengundurkan diri dan digantikan oleh Josh Klinghoffer pada tahun 2009. Selama masa ini, Red Hot Chili Peppers berfokus pada babak baru dan merilis I'm With You (2011) serta The Getaway (2016). Mereka terus memberikan elemen-elemen pop yang lebih kental serta eksplorasi nada-nada baru yang memperluas jangkauan genre mereka tanpa menghilangkan roh funk rock yang sudah melekat.
Setelah lebih dari satu dekade perpisahan yang tak terduga, Red Hot Chili Peppers akhirnya kembali bersatu dengan formasi klasik mereka menyusul kembalinya John Frusciante pada akhir 2019. Kebangkitan ini ditandai dengan semangat baru yang melimpah ruah, terbukti dengan rilisnya dua album studio sekaligus pada tahun 2022, yaitu Unlimited Love dan Return of the Dream Canteen. Dedikasi tanpa henti ini membuktikan bahwa pesona mereka terus berlanjut dan tetap relevan bagi para penikmat musik lintas generasi dari titik nol hingga hari ini.
